Illiad Book One Reflection

If you were an ancient Greek, which of the following statements would you agree with?

I chose A) Achilles’ rage is justified and I support his decision not to fight, even if it means the Greeks might lose lots of men, or even the war itself.

Personally I think that nothing justifies killing another man, nomatter what the cause. While this may not be the views that the ancient Greeks, I still think it is not absurd to refuse to fight without good cause. Achilles said himself that the Trojans never did any harm to him personally or his family, therefore he was not going to go off and risk his life trying to defeat them. Not only does he not want to fight agaisnt people who have not shamed him, but he doesn't want to do so under the rule of an unjust and inexpeirienced leader. He has expressed his dislike towards Agamemnon multiple times, and made it clear that fighting under him is not worth the effort of going to battle.
There is also the side of going to war to "defend his country" because the Trojans have shamed Greece and that is what a just citizen would do. While the arete(is this the correct useage of the word?) of Greece is something that the greeks clearly value above many things, certainly life, I still don't see this as justification. To a Greek, it may seem like ending the lives of numerous strangers, as well as risking their own is nothing compared to defending the "honor of the country". In reality, I think that whether he realizes it, or it is just his rage put into action, Achilles is making a very clever descision to ressist the pressure of battle.
