“The Embassy to Achilles” pp. 251-266

If Achilles knows from his mother that going into battle will let his name live on, and he chooses this over staying home with his wife and living hapily, why is he doing neither?

My opinion of Agamemnon was that he is an incompetent leader. He cares more about himself and his pride than he cares about the people that he is supposed to be ruling. I think Achilles is right to call him out on this and has every right to question his leadership and refuse to fight under it. However, I don't think that Achilles would make any better a leader than Agamemnon because Achilles is clearly a fighter, but at least Achilles is good at what he does. As for my opinion changing after reading this section, after hearing how desperate Agamemnon is to have Achilles back, it only strengthens my belief that he is selfish. He wants Achilles to fight because Nestor, Ajax, and Odysseus told him to and he doesn't want to look bad and have a lost war on his track record. In reality this is just what Achilles wanted; Agamemnon is begging to have him fight.
