I was a little confused about the references and eventually visits Montag keeps making to this old proffesser man. Who is this guy, why is he important, and how is he associated with Montag?
When Montag spoke that line about all things pointing one way or another to Clarisse, I don't think he ment they pointed directly to her as a person, but more what she stood for. Clarisse was clearly very influential on Montag and as he is reading these books and beggining to see through the translucent lies that the government has shoved down his throught his whole life and in this he is constantly reminded of Clarisse. This is because Clarisse was not afraid to question, to wonder, to think. As Montag digs deeper into these books and what they stand for, he too is beggining to do exactly what he has always been taught not to.
I think the "cave" resembles the metaphorical dark corner that society(in the book) has unknowingly crawled into because of their ignorance towards what is really important. In being nudged more and more by the government to fill their lives with "fun" "social" activities giving them a false sense of happiness they are being nudged more and more into this dark cave of unimportance and nothingness.
